ARTIST STATEMENT

Louise grew up in a Canadian diplomat family and spent her childhood moving from one country to the next, collecting valuable experiences from the diverse countries in which she lived. Her mother’s multiple artistic interests had Louise involved in artistic projects from a young age. The encouragement from her parents to explore new ideas revealed the importance of learning and accepting the similarities in people and difference in cultures.

After studying art and psychology at Ottawa University, she graduated from the Algonquin College Interior Design Program in 1985. Further to this she specialized as an architectural lighting designer, starting her own practice, coCreations lighting design inc., in1995. With over twenty years of experience, Louise has completed numerous successful projects, as well as enjoyed partnering with other professionals on many award-winning projects.

Louise’s fascination with the human psyche and the arts led her to explore the emotional and physical response to color, light, shape and space within personal and public realms. She believes that architectural lighting is a metaphor to guide us to our inner knowing and our unique radiance.

As she sees it, light is an integral part of how we see and, most notably, how we perceive our world. Darkness is much more than the absence of light: it’s an entire universe of concealed form. So when light emerges, it brings form out of that darkness, having meaning in relationship to its backdrop.

Symbolically, just as architectural lighting needs to be thoughtfully organized to be effective and valuable, shedding light on our own lives bestows order, and presents us with insights into our priorities: “For us to learn how to create a wonderful life, it’s vital to know our highlights and shadow sides. Illumination, as with enlightenment, allows us to create an artful, passionate life.”

Louise is inspired from the wonderment of life, nature, and human inventions. Aside from her lighting designs, her artistic expressions come in many forms: pottery, photography, painting and colouring, doll making and jewelry design.

Louise's has been an instructor for numerous years and is committed to facilitate workshops that include creativity and play while incorporating evocative viewpoints and meaningful experiences. “My heart and passion is to assist others shape their lives into significant journeys. Lighting paths, so to speak, for others to find their own way, to their own passion, and nurture their individual dreams through their own innate wisdom and guidance.”
